Intake and case management
Intake is often the first contact a person has with NBIS, and in many cases starts with a phone call. After a brief conversation with one of our staff, a convenient time to visit our centre is arranged. At the first meeting the person will be invited to share their story with an intake worker, and be provided with information on acquired brain injury (ABI). Additional meetings may be arranged, as staff work with individuals to explore support needs, offer guidance and / or referral to NBIS programs or other agencies.

When individuals or families have more complex circumstances, they may access our Case Manager for one to one support. This may involve working more closely with people to identify their goals and needs, while providing guidance and advocacy.

Renewing pathways support group
The group meets twice a month with a focus on sharing the success and challenges that members experience following acquired brain injury. The group provides a safe, non-judgmental place where people feel validated. Within the group, different aspects of the recovery process and coping strategies are discussed. The group honors the positive transformations people make to their lives.

Transcending change group
This is a 10 week group, which is offered to assist people to work through the grief and loss that they are dealing with as a result of the dramatic changes in their lives. The grief and loss process is explored, while doing the work of transcending these changes and moving to a place of acceptance and hope for the future.

Brain train
Brain Train is a weekly group that ‘gives the brain a workout’! Members challenge themselves through activities designed to improve thinking skills, attention, processing information, memory and more. Although not a peer support group in the same sense as the Renewing Pathways group, Brain Train does provide a meeting place for people with brain injury, where they can interact with others who are experiencing similar circumstances.

Prevention and awareness education
Most brain injuries are preventable. When worn properly, helmets reduce the risk of traumatic brain injury by 88%. Yet statistics, observations of teachers and reports from the caring professions show that too many young people do not protect their brains by wearing bike and sports helmets. The Nanaimo Brain Injury Society takes action to reduce risky behavior, which can result in life long cognitive, social and physical disabilities, and costs our country billions of health care dollars each year.

Our trained team of speakers offer community based presentations that will promote the use of bicycle and sports helmets amongst children, youth and teens, and reduce the risk of serious traumatic brain injuries.

Renewing pathways centre clubhouse
The renewing pathways clubhouse is a community based program that accepts people with acquired brain injury as members, not clients or patients. At the heart of the clubhouse are the genuine relationships that develop between people as they work side by side to keep the centre open and running.

Members of the clubhouse work side-by-side with staff, using their abilities and strengths, to complete the work of the centre. In doing this the members build self-confidence, regain and develop skills to reach their personal goals and become more independent and self-sufficient.

Our clubhouse assists members in gaining valuable skills and experience to help them further their goals. Members collaborate with staff to carry out the operation and maintenance of the centre through participation in all aspects of its daily activities.
